Second Grade Curriculum
Religion
Text: Christ Our Life: God Cares For Us
The focus for second grade Religion is preparation for the reception of the sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist.
Unit 1: God Gives Us Life and Love
Students will come to appreciate everything and everyone as a gift from God.
Unit 2: Jesus Calls Us to Give Ourselves in Love
Students will explore ways to follow Jesus' laws of love.
Unit 3: Jesus Gives Us the Gift of Peace
Students will be grateful for God's loving mercy in giving us the Sacrament
of Reconciliation (Penance). They will know how to celebrate this sacrament and express a desire to do so.
Unit 4: Jesus Gives Us the Gift of Himself
Students will be familiar with the parts of the Mass and be able to participate in
the celebration of the Mass. They will be prepared to receive the Sacrament of
the Eucharist for the first time.
Unit 5: The Church Celebrates God's Care
Students will appreciate the roles of different members united in the Body Of
Christ, the Church.
Mathematics
Text: Big Ideas Math: Modeling Real Life
The topics of study for Grade 2 Mathematics include the following:
Number and Operations
students will develop an understanding of the base-ten numeration system
and place-value concepts.
Number and Operations and Algebra
students will develop a quick recall of addition facts and related subtraction facts and fluency with multidigit addition and subtraction.
Geometry and Measurement
students will develop an understanding of linear measurement and facility in measuring lengths, this will create foundations for understanding area,
fractions and proportions.
Integrated Language Arts
Literature
Students will be able to read and respond (orally and written) to literature.
Students will be able to analyze literature: plot, characters, setting, theme, and
literary devices.

Procedures
Students will write their homework in their planner. Parents should check the planner every night to make sure that the homework is complete. Students will place any homework papers and worksheets in their Take Home folder. Homework is to be done on the night it is assigned. Students will not usually have homework on the weekend.
Every Friday, students will bring home a Test Folder folder with papers/tests that have been completed in school that week. Please sign each test and return the folder with the papers inside to school on the following Monday. I will keep these papers in a classroom folder so that students, parents, and I may use them to track student progress.
Spelling Homework
Spelling homework will be given every night. Students will write the spelling list in their planner. The Spelling words will also be on Spelling City on-line. The Spelling homework schedule will usually be the following:
*Monday — write each word 2 times each in the homework copybook;
*Tuesday and Wednesday —check homework planner—may be:
write a sentence for each list word,
write a paragraph using the Spelling words
or a “Backpack Page” worksheet.
*Thursday — study for Spelling assessment (quiz); and
*Friday — usually no homework.
Second grade sentences must be at least 7 words long. Sentences should not
begin with “I” and should be about a variety of subjects. Sentences should begin with a capital letter, end with a punctuation mark and be grammatically correct.
Math homework will be given every night. Math homework worksheets will be put in the homework folder on the “Bring Back” side. Any papers on the “Leave Home” side of the homework folder should be kept at home.
Religion, Social Studies and Science Homework
Religion, Social Studies, and Science homework will not be given every night. Students will write homework for these subjects in their planner, and homework pages and worksheets for these subjects will be placed in the homework folder.
